Hi, I'm Devaki Douillard

Hi, I'm Devaki Douillard, the Mwebaza Foundation's Development Assistant. This year I'm returning to Africa to visit our partner schools in Uganda and Kenya. I'll be working on documentary interviews, scholarship programs, solar panel purchases, 2 new school building constructions, sustainable lunch programs and much more! Follow me on this journey from June 30th-July 26th.

The Mwebaza Foundation’s mission is to enrich the relationships among our Colorado and African partner schools through cross-cultural exchange and service learning that enhances educational opportunities, fosters a healthy learning environment, and promotes self-sufficiency.

Today was a very successful day! The morning started with the distribution of pen pal letters written by Niwot Elementary School students. Niwot Elementary School is located in Niwot, Colorado and is partnered with Mwebaza Primary School. For more information on this partnership please click, here. The students are always so excited to receive their letters!

After that, we had the older students write their letters in response. I was able to convince the teachers that the older students are able to formulate their own letters if given suggested topics to write about. Sure enough, each student went above and beyond to share a little bit about their life with their pen pal. In previous years, sample letters would be written on the board and the students would practically copy the letter verbatim, minus a few fill in the blanks. I was pleased to see the teachers giving the students the freedom to express themselves as individuals, some even drew pictures in their letters.

While this was going on, the rusted metal pipes connecting the upper class school building to the water tank were being replaced with PVC pipe. This will last much longer and will allow us to install a valve that will drain the water from the first rain after a long period of dry weather, so the dust collected on the roof won't enter the tank. Then when the valve is shut, all the water from the following rains will be collected in the tank!
